OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA (OSA)

 

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is the more common than central sleep apnea.

 

Symptoms : People with OSA experience snoring, daytime sleepiness, fatigue, restlessness during sleep, gasping for air while sleeping and trouble concentrating, early morning headaches and waking up with a dry mouth.

 

Diagnosis: Obstructive Sleep Apnea can be diagnosed with a Polysomnogram (PSG).

 

Treatment: CPAP or Continuous positive airway pressure is delivered through a pressurised machine with a plastic hose pipe and face mask which automatically adjusts to the patients requirement to keep the airway open.

A:- Obstructive Sleep Apnea is caused by an obstruction of the air passageway in the throat in sleep. The most common symptom of sleep apnea is excessive, loud snoring.

A:- No, not necessarily. Snoring is often a sign of the serious sleep disorder, Obstructive Sleep Apnea however, not everyone who snores has sleep apnea.

 

Obesity, sudden weight gain, loss of muscle tone, excessive alcohol consumption especially binging, retrognathia or posteriorly placed lower jaw, a short neck with double chin.  In the elderly ( geriatric age group)  due to the general decline in the efficiency of respiratory physiology and a failing musculature.

A:-Yes. It is a common misconception that you must be overweight and  male to have  sleep apnea. The most  important symptoms to consider are tiredness during the  day and snoring. If you exhibit these you must seek evaluation .

A:- It can be diagnosed by Sleep study also known as  a polysomnogram ( PSG).
